The Monthly, Australia’s leading current affairs and culture magazine, is looking for a full-time senior editor.
Reporting to the editor, this role involves editing and managing a wide range of writing materials from draft stage through to print and digital publication, including developmental and structural editing. It requires extensive project and author management, and includes working with inhouse and external editors, designers and proofreaders, as well as marketing, advertising and sales departments.
The perfect candidate will be an outstanding line editor with excellent project management skills.
project management of The Monthly’s print and online content
structural and copy editing, fact-checking and proofreading
preparation of magazine content, images, titles for online publication
preparation of marketing/advertising copy in consultation with the sales and marketing team
preparation of other publicity material
commissioning and briefing freelance illustrators, editors and proofreaders
managing administration of contributors
assessing manuscripts, managing enquiries and unsolicited submissions.
e-newsletter assembly, editing and publishing
occasionally assisting with social media and other audience engagement activities
assisting with The Monthly’s subsidiary activities, including The Monthly Masterclasses.
Qualifications and/or experience required:
at least five years’ editing experience (books, journal or magazine preferred)
formal/practical editorial training, with demonstrated ability in liaising with authors on complex edits
a strong interest in Australian nonfiction
a strong knowledge of Australian current affairs and politics, and an all-round knowledge of the arts
excellent skills in project management, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication
a keen eye for detail, outstanding line editing skills, and the ability to adhere to high editorial standards and meet deadlines
proficiency in Word and InDesign
proficiency with online content management systems
the ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
basic Photoshop skills
experience in managing and maintaining personal or professional social media accounts, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
familiarity with Campaign Monitor or other direct email applications.

Hours: 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday
